DESCRIPTION OF AVAILABLE COMMANDS
ON THE CIS USER FORUM
(See GENFOR.HLP for discussion of menu vs. commands)
LEGEND: # = PPN = Personal ID number, Example: 70077,007.
m,n = Appropriate (integer) numbers.
xx,yy = Alphanumeric strings.
<xx> = Identifies a terminal key,
Example: <enter> = Enter or Return Key.
^ = <control> character.
{n} = NUMBER of item from a menu corresponding to the
command.
LIFO = "Last In = First Out".
NOTES: 1) Quotation marks are used for clarity, do not enter them.
2) The words 'type' or 'typing' mean printing to the screen
and not hard copy.
3) MOST Forum commands on the same level may be linked by
semicolons.
Example: After an OP <enter> at the 'Function:'
prompt.
"1;ST;BR;TWM;RNS;P;T<enter>"
Where "1" Changes your Forum usage to Command Mode
"ST" Stops output between messages
"BR" Suppresses typing of commands
"TWM" Types waiting messages as you enter the
Forum
"RNS" Skips messages that you have left
"P" Makes it permanent
"T" Returns you to the Function: prompt
4) The SEN Command:
Sends a single line of text to another user who is
currently in the Forum, or in the Forum's ACCESS, (unless
user is uploading or downloading). --> To reply to a
message you received via SEN, use the Job no. or Node
of the sender. <--
SEN node xx Send a message ch. to node-link (see UST).
Messages sent appear to the receiver as the
following: ;;T01NYC:message
where, ;; indicates an interruption.
T01 is the CompuServe node-link
number
NYC is the node-link city.
SEN n xx Send a message to job n (text less than
79 characters)
Messages sent appear as above except the job
no. replaces the node information. (See UST)
NOTES: (continued)
5) The UST Command:
Lists User Status: job, PPN, node, & activity of current
users. Can be used at ALL Forum prompts, except 'TO:' and
'Subject:' in the message system, and can also be used
at the 'XAn:' prompt in ACCESS.
COMMANDS AVAILABLE AT THE "Function:" PROMPT:

Note: The "Function:" prompt and the "Top Menu" and "Main Menu"
prompts are all at the same point and are functionally
synonymous.
General Commands:
B{5} Read bulletins
E{0} Exit from this Forum (returns to menu from which Forum is
accessed)
G Go to another CIS page number. (G PCS-131 goes to IBM
PC SIG)
H or ? Help for commands.
? xx Explain command xx.
I Instructions for using this Forum (short version of
of this file)
LOG Same as OFF except the phone connection is maintained
and you are returned to the USER ID: prompt of the
log-on sequence.
MI{8} Membership Information (introduction to this Forum).
NEW New commands/features since last update.
OFF Exit from Forum and log-off system.
OP{9} Change your Forum options: (*) indicates default settings.
{1} Change to command mode.
BR Set brief mode, which suppresses repetitious
display of options (use when familiar with
commands)
CN Change your name as listed on this Forum.
DS Set default logon section, i.e. the part of the
Forum in which you are interested; normally this
is set to 0, giving access to all sections).
FIL Use the FILGE editor to compose and edit messages.
Help for the FILGE editor is available in XA9 as
FILGE.HLP.
LL{2} Change line length (80).
MEN Use menus instead of command prompts (*).
(commands may be used in this mode, too.)
MWM Mark waiting messages(*).
NS Don't stop between messages (used for downloading a
series of messages for reading off-line).
NB Not brief mode (*).
P{0} Make options permanent.
PC Change prompt character. (default is ":")
Commands Available at the "Function" prompt: (continued)
RNS RN command skips messages you left.
RNT RN command types all messages (*).
SED Use the internal Forum editor to compose & edit
messages (*)
ST Stop between messages(*).
T{3} Return to Function level.
TWM Type waiting messages.
Please note: once you have become familiar with the
commands and can navigate around the Forum fairly
comfortably, the recommended option combination is as
follows: "1;NS;BR;FIL;MWM;RNS;P;T" and downloading RTNs
to disk for reading and writing replies off-line.
Interactive message reading and replying is more fun,
but much more expensive.
T Exit from Forum (return to page CIS-1 or default top-page).
U User-record of Forum, LIFO (^A stops scroll, ^Q resumes,
^P stops scroll & returns to 'Function:' prompt) Gives
PPN, handle, entry-time (Cannot be used while in ACCESS).
UST Displays user status.
V Access user-interest log: PPN, State, Name, interests.
User-log options:
A Add entry to log, prompts for:
State: 2-letter abbreviation only! Full name
will result in "garbage" in interest
field.
Name: Real full names preferred.
Interests: Space is limited to about 250 characters
so keep it short! Separate items with a
semicolon or space.
C Change your existing log entry.
D Delete your existing log entry.
S Search interest log: prompts for string; blank line
implies all.
T Return to top command level.
VER Shows current version of the Forum program.
R xx Exit from this Forum and go to Forum x.
SN Section Names. Displays a list of Sections which you may
access.
SS# Set Section to #. Any message retrievals will be from
the given section ONLY.
SSALL Message retrievals will be from all Sections available.
Note: There is no way to do all-but-section n.
^A Stop reception at end of line.
^C Stop with options to Continue, Return to command level,
or Log-off.
^O Suspend current message output, resume with next message.
^P Abort current scroll, return to menu/command level.
^Q Resume reception.
^S Stop reception immediately.
MESSAGE SYSTEM COMMANDS: (** = When used at "Function:" Prompt.)

D ** Delete a message that YOU left or YOU received. (Prompts
for message number.)
D n ** Delete message n, that YOU left or YOU received.
L{1} Leave a message.
Composing a Message: (Assumes the use of the default SED
editor.) Messages are limited to 90 lines and about
2200 characters. To:/Subject: lines are limited to
24 characters. Messages addressed "To:*SYSOP" will be
Private to the Sysop, but will not appear marked with
a (P).
. (period) At start of line forces a new line; maximum line
length is 79 characters.
.>n Force margin n-spaces right for this and all
following lines.
.>0 Resume printing at column 0 (left end).
.< Print starting at column 0 until next line that
begins with '.' then resume printing from
column n.
Blank Line
or ^Z Terminates composition.
Leave options: (After message is finished.)
A{6} Abort current message.
C{5} Continue entering text.
D{4} Delete a line (prompts for number).
D n Delete line n.
E n Edit line n (prompts for text to be replaced &
replacement text. Can combine as follows:
En;current string;newstring
I n Insert line above line n & increment all following
line numbers.
L{2} List the message with line numbers.
L n List line number n.
Lm,n List lines m through n.
P Preview message without line numbers.
P n Preview message formatted to line-length n.
S{1} Store the message (reply to a private message
is automatically stored as private).
S n Store under section n.
SP Store Private reply to public message (only sender and
receiver can see message, marked with P).
SP n Store Private in section n (must be addressed
"To: PPN #")
SU Store unformatted message.
SU n Store unformatted message to section n.
SPU Store Private, unformatted message.
SPU n Store Private, unformatted message to section n.
R{3} Replace a line (prompts for number).
RA Read message Again. Used when replying to a message
to read that message again.
Read Messages options from "Function:" prompt:
QS (Quick Scan) Rapidly reviews messages by number,
subject, section, and number of replies.
QS n Quick scan message number n.
QS n ONLY Quick scan message n's thread.
QS NEW ALL Quick scan new messages only (ALL option adds
sender's names).
R{2} Read messages (prompts for Forward, Reverse, or
Selective; and starting number).
RI Read Individual message (prompts for number).
RI n Read Individual message n.
RF n Read Forward in numerical order starting with message n.
RN{3} Read New messages, serial order.
RM{4} Read Marked/Waiting messages (this option does not
appear on menu if there are no waiting messages; if
you marked messages using the SM command, you must RM
before leaving the top menu level or 'Function' prompt)
RR n Read Reverse in numerical order starting with message n.
(Note that the RR command AFTER a message has a
different meaning, explained below).
RS Read Selective:
Format Examples:
RS;F;xx;n search From-field for string xx, or
RS;T;xx;n search To-field for string xx, or
RS;S;xx;n search Subject-field for string xx,
starting with message n (type N for
New messages; e.g., RS;S;PRODUCTS;N)
RT Read Thread (prompts for starting message no.).
RT n Read Thread starting with message n.
S n Scan message-headers beg. at n (prompts for Forward or
Reverse).
SF n Scan Forward message headers, beg. at n.
SR n Scan Reverse message headers, beg. at n.
SD n Scan & Display forward (allows option of reading messages
at prompt beginning with message n).
SM (Scan for Marking) Allows option of marking individual
messages for retrieval by RM.
SMF Scan for marking, forward.
SMR Scan for marking, reverse.
Read Options AFTER Reading a Message:
C{1} or
<enter> Read next message, "next" is determined by mode
(Thread, Forward, or Reverse).
D{4} Delete this message.
M Mark for retrieval by RM.
NS Non-Stop between messages.
RA Read this message again.
RE{2} Reply to current message, continuing thread.
RE n Reply to message n (you must know the message
number, also see UA).
RP Read Previous message.
RR Read Replies to this message.
RT Read Thread of which this message is part,
beginning with first available message on thread.
SEN n xx Send a message to job n containing xx characters.
SEN node Send a message to node. (Follow with xx as message.)
T{3} Return to Function menu.
UA Use Address to store message on new thread (prompts
for Section and Subject; compare RE ).
UST See status of users.
CONFERENCING ON-LINE:
--------------------
NOTE: Any line NOT beginning with slash is transmitted by <enter>.
CO{6} (On-Line Conference) Conference commands (mostly the same
as CB). Note that all conference Commands are preceded by
a slash (/).
/MON n Monitor channel n (up to two channels can be monitored
while TUNed to a third).
/UNM n Discontinue monitoring channel n.
/TUN n Tune (change) to channel n (you can only talk to a
channel you are TUNed to.
CO-correspondences

/HAN Change your handle (pseudonym).

/ROLL Roll 'dice' (displays two random digits;
channels 0-8 only)
/SBU n Squelch by user PPN-#n.
/SCR x Scramble messages by password x.
/SMC x Scramble messages by password x, & monitor clear
messages.
/SQU x Squelch (tune out) handle x.
/STA Gives current status as (a)bc, where;
a = channel. no. (the parentheses are displayed).
b = Number of listeners.
c = "#" if you are tuned to that channel, "*" if you
are only monitoring it.
/TALK n Talk privately with job n (see /JOB, /UST).
/TIM Display time, day & date.
/UST User Status:
Lists Job, PPN, Node, Channel, Status, & Handle of
all current users.
/UST n User Status for channel n.
/UNS Terminate a scrambled session (transmit & receive
clear)
/WHO Return ID of last sender.
/XCL Transmit clear, unscramble reception.
The following <control>-<key> commands are also available:
^C Exit CO & return to Forum main-menu/Function-prompt
(same as /EX ).
^O Abort CO entry bulletin & CO user status.
^P Abort CO entry bulletin; next line displayed same as
for /STA.
^U Erase the just-typed line without sending it.
^V View the just-typed line without sending it (useful
when the line has scrolled off before completion).
ACCESS COMMANDS: (ACCESS is CompuServe's name for database library.)

"Function:" Prompt Commands to Enter Forum's Databases:
X To obtain database descriptions (prompts for section number)
Xn Description of database Xn. (Not the individual files)
XA Access database XA (prompts for section number)
XA n Access database XAn and the files, text and programs
Commands at the "XAn:" Prompt:
BRO Browse. Displays filenames with description/keywords
and then prompts for Read, DOWnload or (T) return to XA
prompt. See extensions that may be used with BRO,
below. (BRO *.HLP)
DEL Deletes a file you submitted. ("DEL FILNAM.EXT")
DOW Download a file to your computer. You may use XMODEM,
CIS A or B protocols, or "capture" method which is
the standard DC2/DC4 (^R^T or XON/XOFF) line protocol.
E or
EXI Exits from database back to Forum top menu or 'Function:'
prompt.
CAT Catalog of entries listed chronologically.
CAT options:
CAT [PPN #] Lists only entries for PPN # (Compuserve
ID No.)
CAT *.xxx Lists all entries with extension xxx.
CAT xxxxxx.* Lists entries with filname xxxxxx.
CAT *.* Lists all entries alphabetically.
CAT ???xxx.* Lists entries whose filename ends
with xxx
CAT/AGE:n Lists entries made in past n days.
CAT/DES Includes descriptions in list.
CAT/PAUSE Stop after each entry.
CAT/KEY:xxx Lists entries with string xxx in
description.
CAT/KEY:xx+yy Lists entries with string xx or
yy in description.
CAT/KEY:xx&yy Lists entries with strings xx and
yy in description.
Options may be chained, e.g.:CAT/DES/PAUSE/AGE:n/KEY:xx+yy
H or HEL or ? (HELP) Displays available commands.
KEY Scan for special keywords.
NOR Return from the Public database. (See PUB.)
OFF Exit the Forum and Log Off the system.
PUB Accesses the Public database shared by all services.
R xx.yy Type file xx.yy (use ^P to abort).
S Scan database, LIFO. See S extensions that may be
used below.
S *.* Scan files alphabetically.
SEN n Send a line message to Job n (see SEN command
on page 1 above)
SEN node Send a line message to <node>
UPL Upload a file from your computer into XA database.
UST Displays user status.
XA Changes to a new database after prompting for
database n.
Commands after the Keywords and Description of a file have been
displayed.
R{1} Read the file. Displays the contents of a file on the
screen. May also be used to download a file. Press R,
open your file, and press <enter> twice. (See file
DOW.HLP in XA9.)
D{2} Download a File. Access error and non-error checking
protocols. For complete description see file
DOW.HLP in XA9.
T{3} Return to "XAn:" prompt.
The following 2 Commands are available to you if you uploaded
the file. You must also be using the same ppn as you did when
you uploaded.
CHA Allows you to change Keyword list and Description.
ERA Allows you to mark the file for deletion by SysOp.
Extensions That May be Used with S & BRO Commands:
BRO [PPN #] see description along with CAT command, above
BRO FILNAM.EXT see CAT command for various ways of searching.
BRO default is all files, wait for command display
description.
/KEY:xx see /KEY option under CAT command.
